Boosoo,
My name is Linda Johnson, and this is my 9th year working in Balmertown, KiHS Head Office, as the Student Success Lead. Before that I lived and taught in North Caribou Lake First Nation, Weagamow Lake for 4 years, and Kejick Bay, Lac Seul First Nation for 3 years, totaling 16 years teaching in beautiful Northwest Ontario.
As the FNSSP Lead, student retention, communicating and tracking students' progress on an individual basis, administer standardize testing (such as CAT4, WRAT5 and EQAO literacy/math) are some of my main duties and objective to ensure that all are successful in their courses and achieve their goals to graduate. I visit all our 13 KiHS classrooms and communities. Also, am always available to help our students, parents and teachers/mentors whenever needed.
Notwithstanding the FNSSP position, I also have created and teach the following courses: Communications Technology, Visual Arts, Media Arts, Digital Photography and Preparation course for the Literacy Test. However, art is my passion. I love being creative and finding new ways to make things, so using computers, digital cameras, art supplies (ie. painting and printmaking) and exploring new technology are my most favorite things to do!
As stated above, my passion is art. Becoming an artist and teacher of art has been a long road with several detours along the way. After raising my family as a single parent, I returned to school at the ripe young age of 42, obtaining my B.F.A. (Visual Art) and B.Ed. from the University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
My art is rooted and grounded in my multicultural heritage, as I know it. My painting entitled Grandma was taken from an original photograph—embedded into the pattern of the dress that "Grandma" wear are collaged family pictures of my brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, etc. It was my Grandmother (my Father's mother) that raised us. This painting symbolizes a self-portrait and life as I have known it.
My work is a thread in my tapestry of images of my life. Being able to create art through unique and contemporary styles by blending a diversity of mediums is my passion. I get excited (with very successful results, including commissioned works) exploring new ways in creating artworks in watercolour, acrylic, oil sticks, photography montage and collage, pastels, inks, charcoals, pencils.
Before moving to Northern Ontario, 10 ten years I developed and taught Fine Arts and Studio Art curriculum in Kansas, Missouri, and Florida. I continue to validate myself through my heritage in and through my work by the persistence of all my memories being perfected and constructed.
