Taking a holistic approach to the student body, I focused on student wellness and increasing achievement through culturally related art and involvement with local communities’ Elders, language, and land.
This included not only traditional art and crafts, but archiving language and stories of Elders work. I worked closely with our Native Language Lead Kathleen Koostachin, and Mental Health Workers: Margarita Quill and Rhonda Kakegamic, and the land based learning lead Dylan McDonnell. The importance was for students interpret such knowledge and understanding relative to them—an important part of their life—through the necessity of establishing an ongoing relationship with Elders.
These efforts were showcased in this year 2019 KiHS Calendar project, which has been published and distributed to all 13 communities and throughout Northern Ontario. Apparently, the Calendar is a big hit. Click on Button below:
